The man accused of being a cheat after a Facebook picture of him kissing another girl went viral has defended himself, saying he “was on a break” with his partner.
Matty Steven, 20, of Wythenshawe, Manchester, received thousands of abusive comments when Pippa McKinney - who was clearly smitten after sharing a smoochin AXM venue in the city centre - tried to find her Prince Charming on Facebook.
It was since shared thousands of times but his former squeeze was tagged in the snapshot of the pair. Her profile showed the pair on her wallpaper - but was quickly removed.
But Matty has hit back, explaining that he was three weeks into a break with former girlfriend Emily, echoing the classic line from hit 90s comedy Friends.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News Matty said: “Me and Emily had been together for two years but had gone on a break. So I do most most lads would do and went on a lads’ night out.
"We were drinking and got chatting to some girls. My mate was trying it on with one of Pippa’s friends so I was the wingman and started chatting to her.
“Yes we had a quick kiss but it was a drunken mistake.
“Everyone is making out like I was in a relationship, but I wasn’t. If I was it would have been cheating, but I’m not a cheat and don’t think I’ve done anything wrong.”
Pippa had taken down his number on the night but misplaced digits so took to Facebook for help.
The 22-year-old from Stockport, now says she feels ‘embarrassed’ by the viral post and also for his girlfriend and said ‘this is not her fault’. She added: “I just thought he was a really nice guy but I was obviously wrong”.
But Matty said he just couldn’t understand why she was so keen to see him again.
He added: “She was obviously smitten but I’m no David Beckham so I can’t understand why she would like me so much. I just work in the bookies, I’m nothing special.”
He has now been forced to leave his hometown due to vicious comments he was getting online and in person.
Matty added: “I have had to come away from Manchester as everywhere I go people recognise me and I’m getting loads of abuse. It’s been really stressful.
“It’s just getting blown way out of proportion.
"I love Emily and would love to try and work things out with her, but she has blocked my number and I have had to delete Facebook because of the abuse I was getting on there.
"It’s just hard to persuade her after everyone else has got involved. She feels humiliated and I can understand why.
“I’m not a cheat and would never have gone home with the girl. She was the one to ask me to go home with her.
"It was just a drunken kiss and think most people have done the same thing at some point. I just never thought this would have got to this point.
“It’s heartbreaking that this has happened from one little drunken kiss.
